About the role

We’re looking for an elite IC who is has exceptional taste. Level is flexible and depends on the candidate, but we're looking for someone at the ~Senior or ~Staff Engineer level. People with less than ~4 years of experience are unlikely to be a fit.

Compensation: we dogfood https://fairoffer.ai, but as a quick reference for SF / NYC, a Senior engineer would be $150-180K + 0.5 - 1.5%, or a Staff Engineer level would be ~$160-200K and 1-3%.

For a highly experienced candidate who isn't looking for full-time but prefers to take on contracting work, we're also open to that (minimum 2-3 month project) -- with materially higher cash comp and lower equity.

Location: remote in US / Canada.

For more on how we hire, build, sell, make decisions, and communicate, please see here. For more on how we think about early employees, see here.

Hiring logistics

We strongly prefer (paid) work trials -- one week working together on a project. We find it's the best way to tell what it would be like to simulate our working relationship in steady state. So the "interview process" is pretty quick: 2-3 video calls over the span of a couple of days.

What a great candidate looks like

We're looking for an elite senior engineer to join our small, tight-knit team (2 engineers, 1 product / design, 1 GTM, 1 CEO).

The ideal archetype is someone who probably has a chip on their shoulder or entrepreneurial itch, and might even want to start a company... but would be open to joining the right company and team.

We're optimizing for:

  • Someone who loves building beautiful products, with hidden moments that delight

  • Those who care deeply about craft: staying on the bleeding edge of the discipline, thinking about new paradigms, and building with AI deeply woven in as a given

  • Those who care about curiosity: about new topics, especially disciplines that combine art and science, intuition and data

  • An engineer's engineer — someone with a deep understanding of frontend architecture and frameworks

  • Raw horsepower (if someone has called you "the best [x] I've ever worked with")

  • Someone who is terrific at pattern matching and can think several steps ahead intuitively when making tradeoffs

  • Early stage startup experience

  • Can be a talent magnet as we grow the team

  • Someone who values speed (moving fast and learning even if we make some wrong choices) over velocity (getting it exactly right the first time)

  • Embody an obsession with solving customer problems effectively, while upholding high standards for reliability & security

There isn't one profile; but examples of great candidates might be:

  • A Senior+ Engineer at a mature company with a high quality engineering culture (Stripe, Coinbase, Airtable, Figma) who has architected complex systems 0-to-1

  • A former founder / founding engineer at a startup

Bonuses:

  • Familiarity with our stack (Typescript, Node.js, React, Postgres, AWS, Render)

  • Experience with building data & analytics products

  • Prior experience with finance / HR software

Probably not a fit:

  • If you have <3 years of experience

  • If you just have experience at a big company (be it Fortune 500 or FAANG)

  • If you haven't shipped anything within the last ~week
